Notes:
- This is something of a "preferred" viewing order, based primarily on original airdate, but adjusted for storytelling continuity and ease of viewing in places. For example, I chose to place the DVD bonus scenes for Doctor Who series 5 where they fit storywise (also the order they appear in on the DVDs), and allowed for all of Torchwood: Miracle Day to be viewed beginning to end before starting the second half of Doctor Who series 6. YMMV.
- The show's producers continue to experiment with expanding into forms of "new media," resulting in various "mini-episodes" and other extras, which are identified by a lighter color. Some have been little more than ads or teasers for the next episode, but they're generally recommended to watch, as they often take opportunities to tell different kinds of short stories that wouldn't necessarily fit into regular-length episodes, as well as sometimes fill in a few gaps in the narrative. I've included links to these where possible.
- Yes, most of the "prequels" would probably more accurately be called "prologues," but that's what they're officially titled.
- Some
video games are
included here, as they include animation and voice acting from the
show's stars, but aren't really essential to experience (and are
possibly not canonical). I didn't bother to include simpler games that
don't tell stories or those that aren't available internationally.
- The BBC has no involvement with the K-9 series, so it doesn't really tie in to anything else, other than that it features what is supposed to be the K-9 robot that the Fourth Doctor left behind on Gallifrey with Leela, and only has a few obscure and inconsequential references to the original series. It's included here for completion's sake, but could be watched at any point.
- Books,
graphic novels, and other prose aren't included, except for a few rare
exceptions where they're tied directly to televised material.
- Also not included are the various tie-in websites, the behind-the-scenes TV series Doctor Who Confidential and Torchwood Declassified, or the related non-fiction kids' TV shows Totally Doctor Who and Blue Peter, except when they contain significant Doctor Who fiction as noted..
- This is still a work in progress, and I plan on making occasional updates to add new episodes and links.
